MORNINGSIDE
Atlanta, GA
Located within Atlanta’s historic Morningside neighborhood, the residence is conceived as a contemporary exploration of procession, landscape, and calm restraint. Defined by its flat-roof geometry and unified slate-shingle exterior, the home balances sculptural simplicity with warmth, material richness, and a deep connection to nature.
The experience of the residence begins with a carefully choreographed arrival sequence inspired by the contemplative relationship between architecture and water found in works such as Tadao Ando’s Water Temple. Visitors ascend gradually through a still water feature, moving upward along a quiet and immersive approach before arriving at the entry. This procession heightens awareness of reflection, sound, light, and material, transforming arrival into an intentional spatial experience rather than a singular threshold.
Upon entry, the architecture immediately establishes a strong visual connection through the main public living space toward the rear yard, detached studio, and greenhouse beyond. This framed axis organizes the residence and reinforces a continuous dialogue between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.
The architecture is composed as a series of interconnected volumes clad entirely in slate shingles, giving the home a monolithic and timeless character. The textured material palette softens the clean contemporary forms while grounding the residence within its wooded setting, allowing the architecture to feel simultaneously refined and deeply rooted to place.
Expansive glazing and carefully positioned openings dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, drawing natural light deep into the home and creating a seamless relationship between living spaces, terraces, gardens, and landscape. Throughout the project, water, reflection, texture, and framed sightlines are treated as essential architectural elements that shape atmosphere as much as form itself.
The result is a modern retreat defined not by excess, but by clarity, procession, and sensory experience; a residence where architecture unfolds gradually through movement, materiality, and connection to the natural environment.
