Halsey Neck
Southampton, NY
Defined by its dramatic butterfly roof and expansive relationship to the landscape, Halsey Neck is conceived as a modern residence shaped equally by architecture, landscape, and light positioned to respond carefully to the site.
The defining butterfly roof form creates both a powerful architectural identity and a functional response to the surrounding landscape. Its upward sweeping geometry draws natural light deep into the residence while framing views of sky beyond. Simultaneously, the roofline establishes a sense of shelter and openness; appearing to lift toward the horizon while grounding the home within the terrain.
Organized as a series of interconnected volumes, the residence separates private and public functions while maintaining a seamless flow throughout. Expansive glazing and screened transitional spaces dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior living, allowing terraces, pool areas, and gardens to become extensions of the architecture itself.
Materiality was approached with restraint and permanence. A palette of cedar cladding, bronze-framed glazing, and natural textures allows the home to weather gracefully within its environment while reinforcing a warm contemporary character. The arrival sequence is intentionally integrated into the landscape, creating a gradual and immersive approach to the residence rather than a singular monumental gesture.
Throughout the project, architecture and environment operate in continuous dialogue. Light shifts across the folded roof planes animating the interiors, and framed sightlines reinforce a constant awareness of the site’s extraordinary setting. The result is a modern retreat where sculptural form, landscape, and atmosphere merge into a singular architectural experience.
