Soundview
Set within a mature landscape on Long Island’s North Shore, Soundview is conceived as a quiet frame for its remarkable waterfront setting. The single-story residence stretches horizontally across the site, settling into the existing tree canopy while opening toward expansive views of the Long Island Sound. A restrained composition of warm wood, dark metal, glass, and textured masonry establishes a deliberately understated architectural language, allowing the landscape, changing light, and water beyond to remain the focus.
The approach is intentionally more private. Solid volumes and layered planting give way to a central garden court, where a sequence of stone paths, reflecting water, and carefully composed landscape leads to a transparent entry. From here, the house gradually reveals the Sound beyond. On the water side, broad expanses of glass and deeply recessed outdoor rooms dissolve the distinction between interior and exterior. Living spaces extend directly onto terraces, lawn, and an infinity-edge pool, creating a continuous progression from architecture to landscape to water.
Soundview also represents an important evolution in BMA’s work as the firm’s first project encompassing both architecture and interior design. Conceiving the two simultaneously allowed the interiors to emerge as a direct extension of the architecture rather than as a separate layer. Millwork, furnishings, lighting, textiles, art, and material selections were composed alongside the building itself, establishing a consistent dialogue of texture, proportion, and color throughout the home. Warm oak, richly textured stone, muted neutrals, and moments of deep blue and rust draw upon the wooded site, shoreline, and changing tones of the Sound.
At the center of the home, a sculptural masonry fireplace anchors the open living and dining spaces while maintaining visual connections across the house and toward the landscape. Custom millwork is integrated into the architecture with similar restraint, while carefully selected furnishings introduce softness, color, and tactility against the home's precise geometry. Even the smallest elements were considered as part of the larger composition. A collection of custom tableware, designed specifically for the residence and handcrafted by an artisan in Costa Rica, extends the design approach to the scale of everyday objects.
Throughout Soundview, architecture, interiors, landscape, furnishings, and objects are treated not as independent elements, but as parts of a single environment.
