BMARAM ISLAND

RAM ISLAND
Shelter Island, NY
Nestled along the protected shoreline of Shelter Island, Ram Island is a quiet composition of architectural volumes embedded within a lush coastal landscape. Drawing from the natural textures and hues of the site, the residence embraces its waterfront setting with a design that is at once grounded, sculptural, and deeply serene.

Working within the existing residence’s footprint, a series of interlocking wood-clad forms are thoughtfully arranged into a curated assembly of pavilions, creating courtyards, framed views, and intimate connections to the surrounding gardens and shoreline. Vertical cedar siding, natural stone, and minimalist detailing define the material palette, imparting a warm and tactile sensibility that complements the residence’s crisp geometry. Strategic moments of glazing open the interiors to sweeping vistas while maintaining a sense of privacy and refuge within the landscape.

At first glance from the exterior, the volumes appear to be simple rectilinear forms yet upon entry, the sculptural vaulted ceilings draw one’s eye upward toward a series of skylights bringing daylight into the core spaces of the home. Inside, the architecture continues its emphasis on texture and restraint. The light-filled volumes are wrapped in oak and limestone, with bespoke furnishings and curated artworks adding quiet richness to the interiors. Custom millwork further enhances the sense of craftsmanship throughout, while expansive glass walls invite a constant dialogue with the changing coastal light.

The outdoor program is seamlessly integrated into the natural contours of the site, with terraces, a pool, and shaded lounges unfolding toward the water’s edge. Landscape interventions are intentionally minimal, preserving the native character of the terrain while enhancing moments of arrival, gathering, and reflection.

Ram Island offers a contemporary vision of coastal living—one defined by understatement, material richness, and an enduring connection to the land and sea.
